Graffiti At Bear’s Den
Debra Weaver sent pictures of recent graffiti at Bear’s Den via Youngstown Art.
I Know I’m Supposed to be outraged, but for all the wrong reason’s.
Let’s face it, Mill Creek is an urban park. Graffiti is nothing new. Bored teens will destroy just about anything they have access to if unsupervised. Even in these pictures, behind the fresh paint, you can see decades of vandalism showing through.
But it’s the fluorescent colors that get me here. These vandals weren’t just bored, they wanted everybody passing by to see how bored they were. It’s not enough to deface public property, they have to deface it LOUDLY.
Read this: Rockclimbing.com’s thread: Here’s a local group of kids. They Know rock climbing in the park is illegal, and are posting routes along with the admonition to protect the area and don’t do anything stupid.
Or my Experiences on Glacier.
According to Mill Creek Metropark’s Mission Statement, the park is to be:
- Responsive to Community Needs
- Environmentally Sound
- Adaptable
- Economically Feasible
Now, I don’t know if RockClimbing is economically feasible, But I do know that Kids today want to do more than play frisbee in the flats and stroll through Fellows.
The ice rink is closed, the swings are down. There’s no snow for the sledding hill. There’s no mountain bike trails, no rock climbing, no skateboard park, no paintball arena.
I’ve seen some progress, and hope there’s more. After all, I know the boating regulations have been updated. But it seems that most of the programs and policies that the park adopts are designed for adults.
The park has the same activities for kids that it had twenty years ago, and probably had twenty years before that. But the kids have changed.
The Graffiti? Not so much. And I have an idea Why.
