Ohio Fall Festivals: Malabar Farm, Beaver Creek and More.

Agriculture remains a large part of the fabric that makes up Ohio, and harvest time brings that truth home. Seasonal festivals are brimming with fall goodness, featuring bushels of squash and apples along with rows of golden pumpkins. These autumn festivals are full of homespun pastimes that remind us of quieter days gone by.

An early fall favorite takes place at Malabar Farm State Park in Richland County. Ohio Heritage Days, September 27-28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, is one of the state’s largest outdoor craft and history festivals. It features more than 70 craftspeople in period clothing, demonstrating the arts of spinning, weaving, woodworking, broom making, molasses boiling and more. For more information, call (419) 892-2784.

Ohio’s thriving grape industry celebrates the fall harvest during the Geneva Grape JAMboree, Sept. 27-28. About 1,500 acres of grapes are grown each year in the Geneva area. Savor the great taste of grapes as freshly squeezed juice, in pies and other baked goods, ice cream, and a myriad of other grape ways!

Indulge your taste for history during the Beaver Creek Fall Festival at the pioneer village. On October 4-5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., enjoy demonstrations of pioneer skills by crafters and artists against the quaint backdrop of the historic village and Gaston’s Mill. Call (330) 385-3091.

Step back in time during Marblehead’s Autumn Lighthouse Festival on October 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Celebrate with the Marblehead community its coastal history with demonstrations, entertainment, crafts and food. Take a tour of Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating Lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Call (419) 734-4424 ext. 2 or visit www.lake-erie.com.

Also, on October 11, celebrate Oktoberfest in an old-world atmosphere with authentic food, refreshments and entertainment during the Festival at the Grist Mill in Mohican State Park. For more information, call (419) 668-2497 or visit www.WolfCreekMill.org.

We’ve got a huge wall to our east that effectively blocks news and activities from across the political border. Take Rte 422 for instance. Most of us would have no problem finding Nelson Ledges or Even Ladue Reservoir. But Take 422 East of New Castle and it’s a different world. It’s that strange and magical land known onlay as “PA.” So this weekend, spread your wings a little and enjoy McConnells Mill Heritage Festival in Slippery Rock Gorge and one of the first of this Fall’s Festivals.
