Site of the Week: Children and Nature

Children and Nature :

It sounds reasonable: Children and nature go hand in hand. I don’t think most people realize just how far we’ve come. We don’t let our kids out of the House anymore, let alone allow them to go wandering off by themselves.

My father tells about hopping on the trains that ran by his house to cross town to go swimming. I Used to bike up into the Hills outside of town to go fishing when we lived in Montana.

My Kids? While I’m pretty lenient, I’ve taken some of my daughter’s friends camping who have never left town before. I Mean that. Like, Warren was another country.

That Makes the work that Steven’s doing at the Children and Nature Journal all the more important.

Look, it’s simple: I’m selfish. I want to hunt and fish, hike and camp when I’m finally ready to retire. In order to do that, the space needs to be there and needs to be accessible. And I truly believe that if no one cares, if the next generation sees the natural world only as some weird and alien antiquity, kind of like Black and White movies, then it won’t be there for me.

If children don’t know what they’re missing, they won’t miss it. D’uh. And then we all Lose.

Thanks. Hope to see you around.

I agree with your assessment. I also recommend a book called “Last child in the Woods- Saving our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder” written by Richard Louv

That’s a very refreshing view. Children need to explore their environment in order to be healthy, when did we become so uptight?
